A formula that is some times used to estimate the seismic energy released by an earthquake is log E=11.5+1.5m,where E is the seismic energy and m is the surface wave magnitude
a)Find the energy released in an earthquake with a surface wave magnitude of 6.
b)If the energy released during an earthquake is 1.2 x 10^15,what was the magnitude?

a. logE = 11.5 + 1.5m
Put m = 6,
logE = 11.5 + 1.5(6) = 20.5
E = 3.16 X 10^20 J (cor. to 3 sig. fig.)
b. Put E = 1.2 X 10^15
log(1.2 X 10^15) = 11.5 + 1.5m
15.08 = 11.5 + 1.5m
m = 2.39 (3 sig. fig.)
So, the magnitude is 2.39.
