So what's next for the Red Sox?

They mainly need to resign Bay and get a shortstop (Marco Scutaro would be a good fit)

Maybe get a first baseman and trade Lowell (moving Youk to 3rd). This is because of Lowell's defense, he is not a good third baseman defensively anymore since he hurt his hip. Offensively Lowell is fine and I would miss Lowell if they traded him so I have mixed feelings about this.


I was mad at Pap earlier but am over it. Truth is he hasn't been quite as dominant this year as in past years and he is a free agent in 2011. So IF Theo can get a lot back for him in a trade and if they think Bard is ready to close I'd say go for it [This has nothing at all to do with what happened yesterday, I've been suggesting this as a possibility since the All Star break).

But, with all that said, Pap is still one of the best closers in the AL and they definitely shouldn't trade him unless they get a lot back and I will still be confident in him if he is back as the closer next year.

You don't turn against a guy because of one terrible game. Even in the playoffs.

They need to sign a SP, sign a SS or trade for one.

The Red Sox don't need to do anything with their pitching. Papelbon is among the top 5 closers in baseball, love him or hate him he's good. You don't throw that away; especially when you have Saito and Wagner waiting in the wings to mitigate the damage if Papelbon really does stumble. The Red Sox rotation is amongst the best in baseball, it just was ravaged by injuries this year. You leave that rotation as it is, and look forward to Clay Bucholz maturing as a pitcher and becoming a dominant ace in the next 2-3 years. No one in baseball will want to face the 1-2-3 punch of Beckett/Lester/Buchholz.

So onto their lineup; this is a bigger problem. They have holes in their bats; I think that Red Sox got delusional with Pedrioa's supposed MVP season. Dustin is good, but he's not as good as his numbers suggested that year. They have speed in Ellsbury, but no one else on the team. They aren't the Angels, the Red Sox need power to win. Their big bats are Youkilis/Ortiz/Bay/Drew...and none of those names strike fear into opposing pitchers. All solid enough in their own way, but they lack an Arod/Vlad/Manny type of hitter. I always said the Dodgers were one slugger away from being dominant and look what they've done with Manny. The Red Sox were simply a slugger away from not contending, and without him they won't. It is crucial that the Red Sox pick up a power bat this offseason, and they won't be a legitimate World Series contender without one.
