Can you get in trouble for destroying your ex-boyfriend's ring that he gave you?

It was his class ring btw.

My ex-boyfriend is thinking of taking me to court for a ring I destroyed. He gave me the ring while we were together as a sign of commitment. When he demanded it back, I gave it to him, but it was in a different form - burned, smashed and destroyed.

Is this case really worth taking me to court for?

I mean, he DID give it to me, meaning it's my property right?

No, you can't get into trouble.

If he gave it to you then there isn't any reason for him to be able to take you to court.

Make sure you attend the court and be polite and honest the whole time just to make sure.

But you shouldn't have to worry, I'm sure nothing can come of this.

it's legally yours, if he brings you to court, the joke's on him. Forget about that douche, and focus on your self.

no this isn't worth going to court for if he gave it to you when you were together that means it belongs to you and that would be rood asking for it back because he might give it to another girl.

so my answer is you shouldn't get in trouble for it.

If you have the money, you might want to consult an attorney on this one. I would think that you are not liable for the damages and can be seen as a gift in the eyes of the law.

He ought to be happy that you didn't sell his ring to one of those cash-for-gold places.

It depends on how the judge (if it even got before a judge) interpreted the situation. In terms of engagementt rings (which I know this wasn't) if he is the one who broke it off, many states give legal protection for the jilted woman to keep (and destroy if she likes) the ring.

I seriously doubt it would even make it to small claims court though.

Did he break up with you? There is a precedent for this case. The courts have ruled that if you break off the relationship, he is entitled to his ring back. If he broke it off, It is yours.

No, you can't. It is yours and you can do with it what you want. That's the reason I don't buy expensive things for girls anymore.

i saw a similar thing to this on a court show one day,
the judge concluded that because he gave this woman the ring, it was legally his.
i probably wouldn't take someone to court over a ring, but i guess it could be sentimental to him?
i'd say he can take you to court for this, but all you'd most likely do is have to pay for the ring.

Possession is 9/10 of the law. But you could still get screwed. We'll see. But seriously, find a more mature way of expressing yourself in future.

No, you can't get in trouble if the ring belonged to you.
