the division winners in MLB?

ok, I read that if Minnesota and Detroit were still tied with the same record after today, there would be a playoff game.....just wondering why? Didn't Minnesota win the head to head with Detroit or do they not go by that in MLB?

the division winners are the Yankees, Angels, Twins, Dodgers, Cardinals, and the Phillies

They don't go by that. Anyways, if they did, the Twins and Tigers tied the last series.
