1. x2 + 14x + k = 0 has no real roots,

Discriminant < 0

(14)2 - 4(1)k < 0

4k > 196

k > 49

2.a. 9x2 - (k + 1)x + 1 = 0

With equal roots, discriminant = 0

[-(k + 1)]2 - 4(9)(1) = 0

k2 + 2k - 35 = 0

(k - 5)(k + 7) = 0

k = -7 or 5

For k = -7, the equation is:

9x2 + 6x + 1 = 0

(3x + 1)2 = 0

x = -1/3 (repeated)

1. We use a pestle and a mortar to grind a solid into a fine powder.

2. To dry solids and liquids, place them in a desiccator.

3. Ammonia and carbon monoxide are toxic.
