On September 4, two students from Guangdong University of Technology were diagnosed with swine flu. They were the first student cases in Guangzhou and were rushed to University Town Hospital. After one day of treatment, their condition had stabilised and they were discharged for a week's quarantine at the school dormitory.
Few students seem to be worried about the flu and say they trust the school's prevention measures.
“The swine flu situation in Guangzhou is not as serious as in other places, an I think I can avoid it by paying more pay attention to personal hygiene,” said Zhou Weitang, a first - year student at Guangdong University of Technology.
But other students worry they might get infected in upcoming military training is exhausting and students get sick easily. Students and parents have been calling for it to be cancelled.“Students who get ill easily will have a high chance of catching a cold or getting a fever because the military training is really hard,”said first - year student Liu Xiaodan, whose parents oppose military training.
Su Yifan, the secretary of Guangdong University of Technology, said students need not worry too much about being infected with swine flu during military training as their health will be monitored closely. Students with fever will be sent to hospital immediately. He said the military training wouldn’t be cancelled, but would be shortened to two weeks.
Many universities have taken measures to prevent the spread of swine flu. South China University of Technology put two infrared thermometers at the entrance of its registration office to measure body temperatures of students coming to register. Students with high temperatures have to undergo check –ups. Swine flu cases will be sent to hospital.
Meanwhile, South Medical University required every student to complete a questionnaire about their health condition on the first day of the semester.
