The energy released by the earthquake is related to the surface magnitude by the equation:
log10Es = 4.8 + 1.5 Ms
Note that the unit for energy in this equation is Joules.

What is the question?

Do you wish to know Es from a quake with Ms=7.1?

1.5*7.1 = 10.65 and add 4.8 = 15.45. log10Es = 15.45 so Es=10^15.45 = 2.8 x 10^15 J.

Normaly the energy release is given in TNT equivalent. Here is the chart. You can also convert into joules.
Approximate TNT (Tri nitro telecom ) Yield for Seismic Energy
Richter scale
1 30 lbs
2. 1 ton
3. 29 ton
4. 1000 ton
5. 32000 ton
6. 1 million ton
7. 32 million ton
8. 1 billion ton
9. 32 billion ton
10 1 trillion ton.
