1.) A compound was found to contain 88.8% copper
and 11.2% oxygen by mass. What is the chemical
formula of the compound?


2.)Red lead is composed of 90.65% lead and 9.35%
oxygen by mass.

(1) Suppose that there's 100 g of compound, then
Mass of copper = 88.8 g = 88.8/63.5 = 1.40 mole
Mass of oxygen = 11.2 g = 11.2/16 = 0.7 mole
Hence the mole ratio is 2 : 1 and thus the chemical formula is Cu2O.
(2) Suppose that there's 100 g of compound, then
Mass of lead = 90.65 g = 90.65/207.8 = 0.436 mole
Mass of oxygen = 9.35 g = 9.35/16 = 0.584 mole
Hence the mole ratio is 3 : 4 and thus the chemical formula is Pb3O4.
