What is Free Agent means?

A free agent is a player who is not under contract with any team. This player can sign a contract to play with any team.

during the first seven years of a players career they are not free to negotiate with any team other than the one who drafted them or brought them up from the minors. they can be traded or sent back down to the minors without their approval. after seven years they are "free agents" meaning they have enough tenure in the majors to negotiate their own contracts with whatever teams they wish...there is probably more to it than that, but that's pretty much it.
