Windermere is one of the closest station to Lake District which is about 15minutes walk from the Lake... There is also buses at Windermere Railway Station connection to other major towns in Lake District...
If you are only planning to make a quick stop on your way down to London from Edinburgh, then I would suggest you not to do so... Simply as that trains to Windermere is very in-frequent so it would be rather inconvience if you are planning for a quick day trip for a few hours... There is just way more to see at Lake District is stoping for a few hours is nothing, so better not do it...
If you want to walk around Lake District, it is not too possible as the Lake District is formed by various lake covering a large area... It is also in a mountain area, which make it rather impossible if you have so little time...
On you way from Edinburgh to London, I would actually suggest you to make a stop at York (a historical city being well preserved)... Since all Edinburgh, York and London are served by National Express East Coast with frequent train services... At the same time, York is a relatively small city which you can actually get it done within a day...

If you are planning to stay around the Lake District area for 2 days, that seems a pretty good option...

It would give you some time to have a walk and look around, there is not much to see if you stay longer, and you will not be able to taste enough if you stay too short... 2 days is just enough and ideal...
