FROM EDINBURGH TO LAKE DIST

I am planning my journey in November to UK. I want to go to Edinburgh for 3 days and on my way back, I want to stop over at the Lake District. I searched online on nationrail.com and see that there are trains from Edinburgh to Windermere. And from Windermere, there is another train by Virgin that travel from Windermere to London Euston. I guess the whole journey takes about 4 hours. Is this true? Is it good to stop by the lake district on the way back London?

If I get off at Windermere, am I already at the Lake District or I need to go there by other transportations? If I don't drive, how can I travel around the Lake District?

Thanks for your help.

But if I am planning to go to the Lake District for 2 days on my way back from Edinburgh, will it be okay?

Windermere is one of the closest station to Lake District which is about 15minutes walk from the Lake... There is also buses at Windermere Railway Station connection to other major towns in Lake District...
If you are only planning to make a quick stop on your way down to London from Edinburgh, then I would suggest you not to do so... Simply as that trains to Windermere is very in-frequent so it would be rather inconvience if you are planning for a quick day trip for a few hours... There is just way more to see at Lake District is stoping for a few hours is nothing, so better not do it...
If you want to walk around Lake District, it is not too possible as the Lake District is formed by various lake covering a large area... It is also in a mountain area, which make it rather impossible if you have so little time...
On you way from Edinburgh to London, I would actually suggest you to make a stop at York (a historical city being well preserved)... Since all Edinburgh, York and London are served by National Express East Coast with frequent train services... At the same time, York is a relatively small city which you can actually get it done within a day...

If you are planning to stay around the Lake District area for 2 days, that seems a pretty good option...

It would give you some time to have a walk and look around, there is not much to see if you stay longer, and you will not be able to taste enough if you stay too short... 2 days is just enough and ideal...
