Major populations of penguins are found in: Antarctica, Australia, New Zealand. A penguin sleep on land by standing with their head under a wing, or lying down on the ground. They sleep often but only for short naps. It is still unknown if penguins sleep while they are in water.

Most penguins feed on krill, fish, squid, and other forms of sealife caught while swimming underwater.

The lifespan of penguins is probably 15 to 20 years, but less than half of all chicks live through their first year of life.

They swim at 6 - 11 km per hour, and can speed up to 22 km per hour upon sensing danger. Their vestigial wings have become flippers, which are used for swimming. They have two swimming movements: porpoising like a dolphin and underwater swimming.
