Minnie rounds off the numbers in the numerical expression to the nearest hundred first:1095.4 becomes 1100
149.85 becomes 150
800.23 becomes 800
The estimated value:
(1095.4 + 149.85) x 800.23
≈ (1100 + 150) x 800
= 1000000
Sandy rounds off the numbers in the same expression correct to 3 significant figure first:
1095.4 becomes 1100
149.85 becomes 150
800.23 becomes 800
The estimated value:
(1095.4 + 149.85) x 800.23
≈ (1100 + 150) x 800
= 1000000
They use different methods of rounding off, but get equal answers.
