A. The following equation represents an important step in the Contact Process for the manufacture of sulphuric acid:

2SO2 + O2 -----> 2SO3; triangle H= -189kj

1.What is the source of the oxygen used in this process?..
2.Describe briefly how the sulphur(VI) oxide produces is converted into sulphuric acid.

3. In the extraction of zinc, zinc sulphide ore is first roasted in air to produce zinc oxide.
(1) Write a balanced equation for the covertion of zinc sulphide to
zinc oxide.

(2) Explain why the production of zinc can be combined with the
production of sulphuric acid.

1. Oxygen from air
2. Sulphur(IV) oxide? You mean sulphur trioxide?
SO3 + H2SO4 --> H2S2O7
H2S2O7 + H2O --> 2H2SO4
(*H2SO4 used is concentrated)

3. 2ZnS + 3O2 --> 2ZnO + 2SO2

4. As production of zinc from zinc sulphide will release sulphur dioxide as by-product, it can be used to produce sulphuric acid by contact method
