Steve, Maggie and Cindy buy a birthday gift together , where the amount spent by steve is 1/3 of that spent by Maggie and 3/4 of that spent by Cindy. Find the ratio of the amounts spent by Steve , Maggie and Cindy on the birthday gift.

Let the money paid by Steve, Maggie and Cindy be $S, $M and $C respectively.The amount spent by Steve is 1/3 of that spent by Maggie, so S = (1/3)M or M = 3S … (1)
The amount spent by Steve is 3/4 of that spent by Cindy, so S = (3/4)C or C = 4S/3 … (2)
From (1) and (2),
S : M : C
= S : 3S : 4S/3
= (S)(3) : (3S)(3) : (4S/3)(3)
= 3S : 9S : 4S
= 3 : 9 : 4
The ratio of the amounts spent by Steve , Maggie and Cindy on the birthday gift is 3: 9 : 4
