Is building wood from Lowes or Home Deopt wood that can look good with furniture?

I want to make a platform bed frame since they look so easy to make. I would use wood from Lowes probably. However, I want this bed to look nice. I will want to stain the visible parts of wood to a nice color that would match whatever color I choose to paint my walls. I also want to make some wall shelving out of this and want it to look great also.

Do i need to go to a higher quality wood store to buy furniture grade wood? or can I get the same results with this untreated wood from lowes?

Thanks

look in the phonebook for quality woods and you will much happier to use a good company and get better advice about paint -- stains -- and the use of certain woods.. After all this is alot of work to get it right and you are building furniture that will last your life time and you will save some serious $$'s by do-it-yourself.. Be sure to get yourself some good tools to do woodworking and your pride will show with the good results.. Sears has good saws and tools and shop the ''hardware'' stores for the best prices... remember cheap wood will always look cheap (( and that is meant in a kind manner to help you decide to buy good stuff - wood and tools - for your projects //// good luck and be careful with saws ....

If you choose the wood carefully for looks, sand it and stain it, it can look almost as good as more expensive wood. A platform bed is not fine furniture, you are obviously not an experienced woodworker and you'd be wasting a lot of your money to buy furniture grade wood. When you go to the store, you can sort through a pile of lumber and pick the best pieces. Flip the pieces over and sight lengthwise down each side to find the straightest ones, as well as looking at all sides to check for knots and gouges. Wood comes in different grades so pick the one that looks about right for how you want it to look and go from there. Not the cheapest, maybe the next grade up. Explain what you want to do with the wood to a staff person, they can help you get started. This is something you can't do online, you'll have to go there. Sometimes, if you're there when a fresh load of wood arrives on the shelf, you can find very good looking wood. If you're trying to buy it when everyone else has picked through it, it'll be harder to find good pieces. The worst of a higher grade can look as bad as the best of a lower grade. Bring gloves if you're going to sort through piles of wood. A palm sander is fairly cheap and will save a lot of time if you're sanding much wood. Use earplugs with it.

For shelving, you're better off to go and look at pine planking or the laminated pine "craft panels" that are sold in various lengths and widths. Buy the width you need and cut to length, don't cut lengthwise if you can help it at all. With a little luck, all you'll have to do is sand a bit and stain. The laminated panels are less likely to warp over time than plain pine.

Hey atlquaker, I am a flooring associate from The Home Depot in Atlanta, and at least with us, you can find some really great species of unfinished wood for all your future furniture projects. In my department, we sell unfinished red oak and in some stores unfinished white oak wood flooring. We actually just made a nice dark mahogony stained table using unfinished wood on the top with pine spindles to support it. But that option is just from my department. In our lumber aisle we do sell hardwood species of oak and maple, as well as pine. All of these come in various widths and lengths and can be cut down a specific size at the store if you need it. We also sell various moldings and trim pieces that can accent the furniture you are using as well as dowels and accent pieces that you can stain or paint to whatever you wish. Wood is rated on an international scale of hardness called the Janka scale, usually the more exotic the wood the more harder, and durable it is. Examples of these are Brazilian Ipe. But it takes fine craftmanship and know-how to make sure you get the results you want. Another great option is sometimesI like going to specialty shops like cabinet shops or woodworkers that do custom work. You'd be surprised that many times they have an extra piece they can sell you or better yet hand out if you are in the right place at the right time. Hope this helps you out, aboveaveragejoe

Truth is, I've been a carpenter for almost 36 years, and I haven't found anything like this for less than 10's of thousands of dollars. Here's the bottom line: If you are planning to start on your woodworking project, this isn't something you should use, it's something that you would be insane not to.

hello,
i am a professional carpenter, and yes, Lowe's and home depot does sell wood that can be used in high end wood projects. both stores carry a large supply of aspen pine(stain will turn out lighter than expected) birch(stain will turn out at med. tone of color of stain) and oak(stain will look darker) we regularly use these products and they are within a reasonable price range. specialty stores charge more, because they do not have the buying power, so stick with the larger stores. also be advised that if you choose to poly the surface of stain, it will appear slightly darker. if you want to darken up a lighter color stain use two coats of stain. also, i suggest an oil base poly. it is far more forgiving for beginners than water based poly and will give that beautiful gold tone over time.
