Placing a few fingers on your throat is the best way for you to find out whether the sound is voiced or not.
( The vibration is much stronger than that when you pronounce unvoiced sounds.)
Examples:
Rise = Ri( "i" as in"iron") Z<========
"Z" is a voiced sound so you should feel some vibration on your throat as you are pronouncing "Z".
"Z" sounds like a BEE that goes zzzzzz
Rice = ri (ai) s<---an "s" sound here. "S" is an unvoiced sound so you won't feel that ZZZZ sound on your throat.
"S" sound is made by going sssssssssss like a snake.
(That is the main difference between "rise" and "rice".)

Other examples:
1) How many liVES(plural noun) have been lost?
Li (ve = is a voiced sound here.) When we add an "s" to it,
the "s" will become "Z".
li VE( vibration) Z( vibration)
It means when you pronounce "liVES",
your vocal cord should vibrate from "ve" to "Z".
The whole question should be like
How many li VE( vibration) Z( vibration) ha VE ( vibration) been
lost?
