The O of the ether has lone pair
Can ether form hydrogen bond with water??
If it form h-bond with water,it can dissolve in water
however,in fact,ether cannot dissolve in water,why??

Each oxygen atom in ether molecule has two lone pairs of electrons, and thus it can form a hydrogen bond with a hydrogen atom in water molecule. However, since two bulky alkyl groups are attached to the oxygen atom in ether molecule, thus the hydrogen bonds between ether and water molecule are more difficult to form than the hydrogen bonds between water molecules. Therefore, ether is only slightly soluble in water. For example, the solubility of diethyl ether (CH3CH2OCH2CH3) is 6.9 g per 100 g of water.
