the objective is to isolate the variable. u start by canceling out the 7 on the left side. use the opposite opperation and multiply 7 by 7 to cancel it out. u have to balance the equation so u do the same thing to 100.

u get 5a = 700

u still have to isolate the variable so since 5 is being multiplied by a, u do the opposite and divide. divide 5 by 5 and it cancels out, then divide 700 by 5 and get 140

so a = 140

oh and btw ted above me doesnt know wat hes talkin about cuz (5/7)a and 5 /7a are the same thing

5/7(a) = 100
5a/7 = 100
5a = 7(100)
a = 700/5
a = 140

Just the way you have this set up can confuse people. Is it 5 over 7a equals 100? or is it five sevenths times "a"? Ill put up both and you can see which one seems to fit the best.

a) 5/(7a)=100
5=700a
a=5/700=1/140

b)(5/7)a=100
a=700/5
a=140

the 1st thing you need to do is to let people know if the left side is [5/7]a or [5] / [7a]...preciseness is important in the field of mathematics

Yup
2009-08-18 6:05 am
5 = 7a(100)
5 = 700a
5/700 = a

Yes.
Just multiply both sides by 7/5
a = 140

multiply both sides by 7/5
a=700/5
a=140
2009-08-18 6:01 am
5 = 700a
a = 5/700 = 1/140

5 = 700a.

a = 5/700 = 1/140.
