Hey, I don't like anime either. Characters are sometimes very one dimensional and the animation gets boring after a while.
1. The Kamen Riders are heros dedicated to stopping evil organizations like Dai Shocker, Fangire, The Undead etc.
Some riders were chosen for this mission while others like Kamen Rider 1 were victims of the terrorists and/or worked under mind control until they saw the horrible things they did and reformed to take down the bad guys.
2: Yes, it is a little darker than Sentai especially during the time Mr.Shotaro Ishinomori was alive. (Kamen Rider's creator) You sometimes see blood or the monster kill people and the plot is a little more complex than Sentai.
3. Depends on your taste in action, if you like campy and goofy
then the Showa is perfect for you. If you like a good story and action then the Heisei era is your cup of tea.
If you want it somewhere in the middle than watch Black and Black RX, they are considered the "bridge point" between eras.
I started watching with Kiva then backtracked to Den-o and now I'm watching Decade and anticipating Double. (the new series)
4. Recommendations: Kabuto, Black, Black RX, Amazon, Kiva, Den-O
and Decade. Try them all and see which one you like.
5. It started out promising, but now it fluxes between very good and average. Kiva was awesome!
Decade, while good disrespects canon and feels rushed (only 31 episodes and spoiler ahead!) The high point was teaming up with Black RX and Black in episode 26 & 27 and teaming up with ALL 31 riders in the movie to take down Dai Shocker once and for all!
