If you got the copyright, then you can distribute yourself.
However, you need to bear many risk.
Such as production cost and distribution cost.
It is because you need to visit all of the dvd store as to promote your dvd to them. If they are interested, they will ask you to give them
some stock for sell ( not buy from you, is free ).
If the market is good, then you get your profit, if not, they will send
back the stock to you. These are the risks you need to bear.

So, if you find a distribution company which is willing to distribute
for you, then they will first consider what is the content and market
about your dvd, if is profitable, they will buy your right and sell
themselves; if not, they mustn't buy for you.
