1st problem:
(p + 2)/3 = (p - 4)/5
5p + 10 = 3p - 12
2p = - 22
p = - 11

Proof:
(- 11 + 2)/3 = (- 11 - 4)/5
- 9/3 = - 15/5
- 3 = - 3

2nd problem:
4w/3 - 1/2 = 5w/4
12(4w/3) - 12(1/2) = 12(5w/4)
16w - 6 = 15w
w = 6

Answer: w = 6

Proof:
(4[6])/3 - 1/2 = (5[6])/4
24/3 - 1/2 = 30/4
48/6 - 3/6 = 15/2
45/6 = 15/2
15/2 = 15/2

1) p + 2/3 = p - 4/5

Distribute LCD to get rid of the denominators. Here, the LCD is 3*5 = 15

15(p + 2/3 = p - 4/5)
5p + 10 = 3p - 12

Rearrange by transposition so that like terms are together.
5p - 3p = -12 - 10
2p = -22 (Divide both sides by 2)
p = -11 (Answer)

Checking:
-11+2/3 = -11-4/5
-9/3 = -15/5
-3 = -3 (True)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2) 4w/3 - 1/2 = 5w/4
Distribute the LCD to get rid of the denominators. Here, the LCD of 3, 2 and 4 is 12.
12(4w/3 - 1/2 = 5w/4)
16w - 6 = 15w
Rearrange by transposition so that like terms are together.
16w - 15w = 6
w = 6 (Answer)
Checking:
4(6)/3 - 1/2 = 5(6)/4
24/3 - 1/2 = 30/4
8 - 1/2 = 15/2
15/2 = 15/2 (True)
Hope this helps.
1)
(p + 2)/3 = (p - 4)/5
p + 2 = 3[(p - 4)/5]
5(p + 2) = 3(p) - 3(4)
5p + 10 = 3p - 12
5p - 3p = -10 - 12
2p = -22
p = -22/2
p = -11
2)
4w/3 - 1/2 = 5w/4
4w/3 - 5w/4 = 1/2
12(4w/3 - 5w/4) = 12(1/2)
4(4w) - 3(5w) = 6(1)
16w - 15w = 6
w = 6
I will do the second one only:
4w/3 - 1/2 = 5w/4
we want to REARRANGE this equation in order to find out what "w" equals.
So long as we do the same to both sides the equation will still be true.
So:
(4w/3 - 1/2) - 4w/3= (5w/4) - 4w/3
- 1/2 = 5w/4 - 4w/3
- 1/2 = w*(5/4) - w*(4/3)
if Left Hand Side = Right Hand Side then Right Hand Side = Left Hand Side, right?
w*(5/4) - w*(4/3) = - 1/2
how many w's are there?
5/4 - 4/3 of them.
= (5*3 - 4*4)/(3*4)
= (15 -16)/(12)
= -1/12
So we have:
w*(-1/12) = - 1/2
Now multiply both sides by 12...
-w = -6
w = 6
1st one has no solution as p-p=0
2nd one is:
4w/3 - 1/2 = 5w/4 all multiply by 12
this equal to :
16w - 6 = 15w
16w - 15w = 6
w = 6
I thought so too:
Qu 1
Can only assume that question must read, NOT AS GIVEN , but as :-
( p + 2 ) / 3 = ( p - 4 ) / 5
5p + 10 = 3p - 12
2p = - 22
p = - 11
BUT - substitute p = -11 :
(-11+2)/3 = (-11+4)/5
-9/3 = -7/5.............do I need to solve further!!
1 (p+2)/3=(p-4)/5
5(p+2)=3(p-4)=> 5p+10=3p-12 => 5p-3p=-12-10 => 2p=-22 => p=-11
2) 4w/3-1/2=5w/4 => 4w/3-5w/4= 1/2 => (4*4w -3*5w)/4*3 = 1/2
=> 16w-15w / 12 = 1/2 => w/12= 1/2 => 2w=12 => w=6
