solar eclipse

The solar eclipse is the natural phenomena that the sun is concealed by the moon.

When the sun, the moon and the earth are close to arranging into a straight line, the earth will enter the umbras or penumbras of the moon, the solar eclipse will take place.

The solar eclipse can be divided into three kinds partial solar eclipse, annular eclipse and total solar eclipse.

Because the track of the moon and the earth, on the same level, the solar eclipse will not happen each month, but what different from ideas of common people is, the solar eclipse is not rare, there is the solar eclipse with two times or the above more in one year, for example there is solar eclipse four times within A.D. 2000 only, but because the solar eclipse is taken, can see the range of the solar eclipse area is not wide, the result is in the same area, can just see partial solar eclipse once every two to three years equally, and the total solar eclipse is very rare and grand astronomical phenomenon even more.

It's a pity, Hong Kong has no chance to see total solar eclipse too over the next 100 years.

Even so, we can still see annular eclipse once in 2012, and put partial solar eclipse once and happen in 2002.

A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the Sun and
the Earth so that the Sun is fully or partially covered. This can only
happen during a new moon, when the Sun and Moon are in
conjunction as seen from the Earth. At least two and up to five solar
eclipses can occur each year on Earth, with between zero and two of
them being total eclipses.[1] Total solar eclipses are nevertheless
rare at any location because during each eclipse totality exists only
along a narrow corridor in the relatively tiny area of the Moon's
umbra.

A total solar eclipse is a spectacular natural phenomenon and many
people travel to remote locations to observe one. The 1999 total
eclipse in Europe helped to increase public awareness of the
phenomenon, as illustrated by the number of journeys made
specifically to witness the 2005 annular eclipse and the 2006 total
eclipse. The recent solar eclipse of January 26, 2009 was an annular
eclipse (see below), while the solar eclipse of July 22, 2009 was a
total solar eclipse.

In ancient times, and in some cultures today, solar eclipses have been attributed to supernatural causes. Total solar eclipses can be
frightening for people who are unaware of their astronomical
explanation, as the Sun seems to disappear in the middle of the day
and the sky darkens in a matter of minutes.
