Find the x and y intercepts of each linear equation. Be sure to write your answers as ordered pairs.

1. y = 3x - 6
2. 6y = -x + 2

sub x=0
... y=(3x0) - 6 = -6 point ( 0,-6)

6y=0+2
6y=2
y=1/3
point ( 0,1/3)

sub y=0
0=3x-6
6=3x
x=2

point (2,0)

6*0 =-x+2
0=-x+2
0-2=-x
x=2
point (2,0)

y = mx + b (m = slope and b = y-intercept)

1)
y = 3x - 6 (slope is 3 and the y-intercept is -6)

2)
6y = -x + 2
y = (-x + 2)/6
y = -x/6 + 2/6
y = -1/6(x) + 1/3 (slope is -1/6 and the y-intercept is 1/3)

y = 3x - 6 (1)
6y = -x +2 (2)

get all y on one side of the equation and all x on one side and solve

so we start with y = 3x -6 plug this into second equation to make new equation to solve

6 x ( 3x - 6 ) = -x + 2
18x - 36 = -x +2
-2 - 36 = -18x - x
-38 = - 19x
-38 / - 19 = x
2 = x

substituite for x in either of the first or second equation:

y = 3 (2) - 6

y = 6 - 6

y = 0

so x is 2 and y is 0 if you substituite these numbers in the equation you would prove that these intergers make the equation true

Put x = 0 in both the equations to get the y intercepts of the respective equations.

Similarly, put y = 0 in both the equations to get the x intercepts of the respective equations.

And write them as in the format given below:

(0, y) and (x, 0), for both the equations, so that they are ordered pairs.

Well!!!

To find x-intercept, put y =0 and solve
To find y-intercept, put x = 0 and solve..

1. y = 3x - 6 ===> x = (y+6)/3
x-intercept : y=0==> x = 6/3 =2==> (2,0)
y-intercept: x = 0==> y = 0-6 = -6==> (0,-6)

2. 6y = -x + 2
x-intercept : y=0==> x = 2==> (2,0)
y-intercept: x = 0==> y = 2/6 = 1/3==> (0,1/3)

y intercept= on the y axis= the x coordinate must be 0

x intercept=on the x axis=the y coordinate must be 0

1. y int=(0, -6)
x int=(2, 0)

2. y int=(0, 1/3)
x int=( 2, 0)

intercepts are just when the other variable is 0. so the y intercept is when x equals 0. so 1. y int. = -6 x int.=2 and 2. y int.=1/3 x int.=2

the meaning of x and y intercepts is asking for the coordinates when either x or y is 0. so basically just plug in x is 0 to find y, and then plug y is 0 to find x.

1) (0,-6) (2,0) so x intercept = 2, y intercept = -6
2) (0,1/3) (2,0) so x intercept = 2, y intercept = 1/3

Qu 1
( 0 , - 6 ) and ( 2 , 0 )

Qu 2
( 2 , 0 ) , ( 0 , 1/3 )
