in the figure , ABCD is a rectanglewith dimensions 5X8, HBJI andEFGD are twoequal squares . Let AH=4x

(a). express the side of the square EFGD in terms of X,hence write down the length of AE in terms of X.

(b). find ,in terms of X ,the area of the polygon AHIJCGFE.

(a)the side of the square BHJI
=8-4x
It is because HBJI andEFGD are two equal squares,
so the side of the square EFGD=8-4x
Hence, the length of AE=4x-3

(b)the area of the polygon AHIJCGFE
=area of rectangle ABCD-area of square HBJI-area of square EFGD
=8*5-[(8-4x)^2]*2
=40-(16x^2-64x+64)*2
=40-32x^2+128x-128
=-32x^2+128x-88(sq.units)
