look at it as this. put the -4 aside and multiply -1 by the -4 in parenthesis, you will get +4.

then you will write the problem as -4 + 4, which will easily give you 0

you answer would have been 8 if the problem was written as 4 - ( - 4 )

if you had a debt of 4 dollars and it was taken away. How much would you owe??

The answer is most probably 0 as everyone else is saying, but I have seen some (rather annoyingly pedantic) teachers who decided that there was a difference between a minus and negative signs use a minus sign in front of the expression to mean the same as 0 - expression. So it is conceivable that [– 4 – ( – 4 )] is supposed to mean [0 – 4 – ( – 4 )] or [–( 4 – ( – 4 ))] and equal -8.

When you subtract a negative number, you add that number instead.

-4 + 4 = 0, and it's a lot easier to see that when it's simplified from -4 - (-4).

(Even if it was -4 - 4, the answer wouldn't be 8, it'd be -8)
