Most of us work for money and the vast majority of your average jobs are not particularly interesting (some of them are positively boring). I am talking about clerical and admin jobs, post room-assistant, data entry operative, legal filing assistants and so on. I am not talking about positions with a future!
So why is it that when we go for a job interview for this roles we have to find convincing answers to questions such as 'Why to you want this job?', or 'You have read the job description; what attracts you most to this job?'
Is it because we have to show that, even at this basic level, we can play the game of flattering employers? Or is there something else...?

1) CHECK THE PERSON'S UNDERSTANDING OF THE JOB THAT THEY ARE APPLYING FOR.2) TO UNDERSTAND THEIR REASON FOR WANTING THE JOB: ARE THEY SERIOUS, ETC.
3) TO KNOW MORE ABOUT THE INDIVIDUAL.
4) TO SEE IF THE PERSON IS LIKELY TO FIT IN.
5) TO DEVELOP A RAPPORT WITH THE APPLICANT.
6) TO SEE IF THEY CAN COMMUNICATE WELL.
7) TO ASSESS THEIR LEVEL OF CONFIDENCE, IN INTERPERSONAL INTERACTION.
8) TO SEE WHAT THEY ACTUALLY KNOW ABOUT THE COMPANY.

they want to see if you can communicate clearly.
you don't have to give an answer that lies about why you want to work there - a truthful answer that "you are a good technology firm in the area i want to live works fine."
they are comparing you across several nebulous categories with other applicants, to get a feel for if they, and their peers could work with you.
If you have a bad attitude about the questions, how are you going to handle being given a really crappy, but real, assignment?
they want to see how you think on your feet.
Almost none of them want to see how well you lie and flatter. That will rarely get you hired.
Having a personality that wasn't stamped out of a machine is a plus, so long as it is not an offensive, depressing, or blaming others sort of personality.
