Open economy is an economy that has international trades of goods and services. Advantage would be that the citizens have more choices to products and services and eventually at a more competitive pricing. With open economy, the overall economy would growth faster as the customer base is larger (i.e. not limited to its own country), a very good example is Switzerland where majority of the GDP is from exports (i.e. watches, chocholate, and etc). Another very good example of an open economy would be the USA where they have import and export pretty much anywhere in the world.

A closed economy, on the other hand, does not take part of the international trades and the economy is sustain by internal consumption. It doesn't necessarily mean that it most be self-sufficient but it is just that the growth of the economy has to be depending on itself. A complete close economy is rare nowadays, and the closest modern example I think would be North Korea in which it only trade small amount with China and pretty much no one else.

Hope this help
Cheers
