Can a US citizen go to Shanghai,China (mainland) for a visit?

The only restriction is that you must have a visa.

To get a visa you must prove to the visa officer that you have a return flight (for tourist or business trips) or your going to leave the country (ie after work or study)

and one of the following

1) Proof of a hotel booking
2) An invite letter from a friend or from who you're doing business with.

Of course. There are literally thousands of US citizens in Shanghai at any one time. Many work there. Many visit.

All you need is a passport, a visa and a ticket.

As long as you have a passport, and get a visa from Chinese embassy in the U.S.


The only ones who can't go to China are the few ones being blacklisted troublemakers who always go there to make troubles ... such as organize riot.
