first find the common denominator (bottom number)
....................it is 6
then find the equal with that denominator
.........................it is 3/6 plus negative 2/6
then you subtract (same as adding a negative)
......................... so 3 - 2 =1
you subtract the numerators (top #) and leave the denominator
...................so the answer is 1/6
and when you add a negative it is the same as subtracting

You should agree with the following statement:
1/2 + (-1/3) is the same as 1/2 - 1/3
Because adding a negative is the same thing as subtracting a positive.

Now, when you're adding, or subtracting fraction you MUST find a LCD or Least Common Denominator. And LCD is the lowest number that both of the numbers in the denominator (on the bottom) will go in to.

The two numbers we are referring to are 2, and 3. Thus, you should agree that the LCD is 6.

You multiplied 2 by 3 in order to get 6 correct?
So, you multiply the top by 3 as well, because whatever you do to the bottom, you must do to the top:
1/2 * 3/3 = 3/6

Next, you multiplied 3 by 2 in order to get 6, so you must multiply the top of that fraction by 2 as well:
1/3 * 2/2 = 2/6

As you can see, we multiplied both fractions by one number, over the same number. We're not changing the value of the number at all. We're only multiplying it by one. Put 2/2 or 3/3 in your calculator if you don't believe me ;)

Now your equation is:
3/6 - 2/6

When adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator you add of subtract the top, and keep the bottom.

3/6 - 2/6 = 1/6
(Because 3 - 2 = 1)

Hope that helped ;)

1/2 - 1/3 find a common denominator

3/6 - 2/6 = 1/6
2009-07-06 11:15 am
1/2 + (-1/3)
= 1/2 - 1/3
= (1 x 3)/(2 x 3) - (1 x 2)/(3 x 2)
= 3/6 - 2/6
= 1/6

1/2 + (- 1/3) =
1/2 - 1/3 =
3/6 - 2/6 =
1/6.

(1/2) + (-1/3) = (3/6) + (-2/6) = [3 + (-2)] / 6 = 1/6

(3/6) + (-2/6) = 1/6

well 1/2 is greater than -1/3 so answer is positive:

1/2 +(-1/3) = 1/2 -1/3 = (3-2)/6=1/6.

so answer is 1/6.

you can simply say that 1/2 =0.5 and 1/3=0.3333 so

0.5-0.3333=0.1667

1. either find a common denominator (6)
3/6-2/6= 1/6

2. make it into decimals (but thats more confusing because 1/3 is a repeating decimal)

1/6
