6(x + 3y) = 5
6x + 15y = 5
6x = 5 - 15y
x = (5 - 15y)/6

Answer: x = (5 - 15y)/6 OR x = 5/6 - 5/2y

First, we have to expand:
6(x + 3y) = 5
6x + 18y = 5
Move 18y to the other side. Don't forget that when moving numbers/variables across the equal sign, we must change the numbers/variables to to opposite sign:
6x = 5 - 18y
Divide both sides by 6 to cancel the 6 on the left side and make it equal to one:
(6x)/6 = (5 - 18y)/6
1x = (5 - 18y)/6
x = (5 - 18y)/6

6(x + 3y) = 5
x + 3y = 5/6
x = -3y + 5/6

6 (x + 3y) = 5 <=>
6x + 18y = 5 <=>
6x = 5 - 18y <=>
x = (5 - 18y) / 6

First, distribute the 6 through the parenthesis:

6x + 18y = 5

Now, move anything that doesn't have x as a term to the right side of the equation:

6x = 5 - 18y

Now, divide both sides by the coefficient of x:

x = (5 - 18y)/6
