1/2(3x + 5) = - 3
3x + 5 = - 6
3x = - 11
x = - 11/3

Proof:
1/2(3[- 11/3] + 5) = - 3
1/2(- 11 + 5) = - 3
1/2(- 6) = - 3
- 3 = - 3

( 1/2 ) ( 3 x + 5 ) = - 3

3 x + 5 = - 6

3 x = - 11

x = - 11 / 3

(1/2) ( - 11 + 5 )

(1/2) ( - 6 )

1/2(3x + 5) = -3
(3x + 5)/2 = -3
3x + 5 = 2(-3)

1.5x+2.5=-3
Then we balance the constants first, by subtracting 2.5 from both sides
