1/2(3x + 5) = - 3
3x + 5 = - 6
3x = - 11
x = - 11/3
Answer: x = - 11/3
Proof:
1/2(3[- 11/3] + 5) = - 3
1/2(- 11 + 5) = - 3
1/2(- 6) = - 3
- 3 = - 3
( 1/2 ) ( 3 x + 5 ) = - 3
3 x + 5 = - 6
3 x = - 11
x = - 11 / 3
CHECK
(1/2) ( - 11 + 5 )
(1/2) ( - 6 )
- 3
1/2(3x + 5) = -3
(3x + 5)/2 = -3
3x + 5 = 2(-3)
3x + 5 = -6
3x = -5 - 6
x = -11/3
1/2(3x+5)=-3
Useing distributive property,
1.5x+2.5=-3
Then we balance the constants first, by subtracting 2.5 from both sides
1.5x=-5.5
Divide -5.5 by 1.5 and we get
x=-3 2/3, or
x=-11/3
To check,
-11/3*3+5
-6
.5(-6)=-3
-3=-3
(.5)(3x + 5) = -3
multiply the .5 through the brackets
1.5x + 2.5 = -3
subtract 2.5 from both sides
1.5x = -5.5
divide both sides by 1.5
x= (-5.5)/(1.5) = -11/3
if it is 0.5*(3x+5) = -3
distribute:
1.5x + 2.5 = -3
1.5x = -5.5
3x = -11
x = -11/3
if it is 1/((2(3x+5))) = -3
multiply either side by 2*(3x+5)
1 = -3*(2*(3x+5))
1 = -3*(6x+10)
1 = -18x-30
18x = -31
x = -31/18
