wHAT CAN I do to this website to make it stand out?

Things I would do to the site to make it stand out more:

1) Too many links in the nav. bar. The nav bar is running onto two lines. It makes the website look messy and "overloaded" with stuff. You might want to reorganize your nav bar. Or, another way to do it is move some of the links to the sidebar. For example, instead of "Donate" create a catchy "donate" button to be placed on the sidebar. This way, the "donate" page is not lost in the nav bar. Same thing with "Eye candy of the month" Use an image plugin to display the eye candy on the sidebar. This way, the image is right there and people don't have to click on the link to see the image.

2) Instead of using color blocks, maybe try using photographs? It'll give the site a more personal touch and make it more interesting. You're trying to create a magazine style website, right? Photographs and images will help catch people's attention.

There are tons of wordpress plugins and widgets you can use to spice up your site. Like instead of showing your email address on the "Contact" page, use a contact form (I like cforms). Showing your email address is a big no-no unless you want to be spammed.

I love working with Wordpress because you can achieve so much with different themes and plugins. Let me know if you need more suggestions or links to some of the plugins I recommend.

It looks unfinished. The huge blocks lack purpose if they were filled with descriptive information that would help. A very clear menu structure you have the top and the big blocks which is kinda confusing. Perhaps a paragraph about the sites purpose. AT first glance you kinda say "What the hell is this". A color theme that matches I don't get the brown/purple and then the blocks. I like the fact your not relying on huge graphics but some more content like a news section would be good.

Then after that a proper title tags meta tags for keywords and description.
