It is free at the point of service. However, Canadiana pay for it through higher taxes. For the middle 60% the extra taxes you pay in Canada are about the same as what you pay in the USA for medical insurance premiums so it balances out.

Only the bottom 20% are better off in Canada than the USA as the medical plan covers everyone. And the poor do not pay as much in taxes.

The top 20% are better off in the USA as the taxes in the US are lower.

I assume you are living in the U.S. ? Health care in Canada is not " free " we pay for it through higher taxes on "sin" items and a slightly higher income tax rate. It is only naive morons who refer to it as "free" .

Canadian health care seems free because we never get billed for our medical treatment, but we do pay for it in taxes. So, when comparing the amount of taxes a Canadian pays to what someone else pays (say, in the US for example) isn't really fair. All Canadians pay taxes so that all Canadians can have 'free' health care.

Health care is not completely free in Canada. For example, I pay $54 each month for MSP (provincial health services). However, that's all I have to pay even if I end up needing more treatments (ie. MRI, surgery, etc.) For example, I am now 38 weeks pregnant and will be going into labor anytime...I haven't had to pay for any of the blood tests, ultrasounds, doctor's visits, scans, flu shots, or the labor and delivery and hospital stay later on...it's all covered by the $54/month I pay, as well as the taxes that I pay each year.

Alberta just got rid of their health care fees. However, it is not technically free. We do indeed pay higher taxes which covers the cost of health care for us and those who do not make enough to pay any taxes at all.

But yes, we can go to the doctor when we need to and we do not need to pay for it.

Each province in Canada operates a health care insurance scheme. People pay directly in some provinces and through taxes in others.

Because of the single payer arrangement, there are comparatively low admin costs and no caps. Everyone resident in the province is covered.

You think $85 is a lot? Someone I know in the US paid $3500 to lie on a gurney in emerg for a weekend, before costs of doctors etc.

The health care varies from province to province. I know BC, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec all have fees (minimal) for health care, I have lived in the above provinces and paid anywhere from $14 to $50 for health care (dental care is only free if you are a pensioner, child under 16 or on welfare...everyone else pays). The only province that I know has free health care is Saskatchewan (this does not cover dental).

Yes. Its free, you can actually spend a night at the hospital and not go bankrupt :) Eye health (from ages 19 to 75?) is not free and neither is dental care.
