The city of Detroit is in no position to finance a new arena for the Wings and Illitch is reluctant to use his money to build and own his own stadium so for the foreseeable future the Wings will continue to play at the Joe. The latest rumors involve some demolition and recontruction inside the Joe so they can add some luxury boxes. They only have skyboxes at the Joe and lose a lot of money that regular luxury boxes provide. They wont leave the Joe unless they get a new building....moving to the Palace of Auburn Hills wont happen....the Davidson family and the Illitch families are far from friendly to eachother. There have been "issues" between them in the past and the Wings also depend on the Canadian fans who come from Windsor, many of whom are season ticket holders. And they likely wont travel the additional 60-75 minutes to get north to the Palace either.

The Red Wings will likely sign a short term lease renewal and continue to play at JLA for at least 2-3 years and maybe up to 5 while they finalize plans to build a new stadium at the site of the former home of the MLB Detroit Tigers....Tiger Stadium. The city probably won't help the Illitch's build or finance a new stadium so the Illitch's will be forced to finance the new stadium themselves. On the other hand, the Wings/Illitch's may receive a little help possibly from the city because of the fact that the Red Wings have helped the city in terms of revenues due to their success over the least 15 years or so.

The area around the old Tiger Stadium (Cork-Town) is still up and running and those businesses are holding on to the hope that one day soon, a new Stadium will replace Tiger stadium which has been slowly demolished recently.

There is no chance the Red Wings will play at the Palace of Auburn Hills, home of the NBA, Detroit Pistons among many other sporting events and concerts etc. The Palace and Palace Entertainment happen to be one of the busiest sites as far as Arenas/Stadiums for the use and booking of different events and therefore wouldn't be conducive to hosting Red Wings games.

"If" they don't go back to the Joe, they might be able to play at the Palace of Auburn Hills. But they will probably stay at the Joe.

I think they will stay in their old stadium.
