The bright bands are light emiited by excited atoms in the discharge tube.
When a beam of electrons is made to pass through the tube, atoms of gas in the discharge tube are excited by the electrons through collisions. Spectral lines of characteristic wavelengths will be emitted by these excited atoms when they fall back to the ground state.
These emitted spectral lines, after passing through a spectrometer (using either a prism or a diffraction grating), will spread out on a screen and are observed as bright lines/bands.
