well you have to use a process called (FOIL)

IT GOES

(First)+(Outside)+(Inside)+(Last)

SO

(x*x)+(x*-1)+(3*x)+(3*-1)

Then

x^2 + x + 3x - 3

So

x^2+4x-3
is your answer.

Expansion:
(x + 3)(x - 1)
= x*x - x*1 + 3*x - 3*1
= x^2 - x + 3x - 3
= x^2 + 2x - 3

x ( x - 1 ) + 3 ( x - 1 )
x ² - x + 3 x - 3
x ² + 2 x - 3
