1. My family __were__ having their dinner when I arrived home last
night.


2. A lot of money __was__ taken by them.

Basic rules:




999) Singular/ uncountable nouns + was<==============

9999) Plural + were

" family" can be either SINGULAR or PLURAL.


1) My family is big. ( It means my family here. It doesn't state my family MEMBERS.)

2) My family were waiting for me at 8 PM last night.

( "My family" is considered PLURAL here. It means my family members.)

A lot of/ lots of + countable or uncountable nouns


A lot of money money = uncountable

Lots of money ( same as above)


A lot of cars car(s) = countable cars = the plural of "car"

Lots of cars ( same as above)



According to my rule 999, you should write

"A lot of money( uncountable noun) WAS TAKEN( passive voice)

by them."

如:
Amy was sleeping
the cat was eating
they were not at home

因為family係眾數....所以係用were...而money係一樣數唔到的物體(uncountable noun)....所以就係用was黎表達啦.~~
