The command module of a spacecraft is in the shape of a frustum of a right circular cone. The radius of the upper base is 0.5m and the radius of the lower base is 2m. The height of the module is 4m.

a) Find the volume of the module in terms of π.

b) To protect the module, the curved surface of the module is coated
with heat shield. If the weight of 1m^2 of the heat shield is 38kg, find the total weight of the heat shield.

thank you.

(a) Volume of a frustum of a right circular cone is
(1/3)丌h(R^2+r^2+Rr)
(1/3)丌(4)(2^2+0.5^2+2x0.5)
=(1/3)丌(4)(5.25)
=(1/3)丌(21)
=7丌

(b) Area of the curve surface = 丌(R+r)L where L is the slant height
L^2=(R-r)^2+H^2
L^2=(2-0.5)^2+4^2
L^2=2.25+16=18.25
L=4.272m

Area of the curve surface = 丌(R+r)L
=丌(2+0.5)*4.272
=33.55m^2

Total weight = 33.55x38
=1275kg
