Fractions are killing me!! How would you solve this problem?

Ok First buy a calculator :P
Anyways when you are doing fraction during addition or subtraction the denominator/bottom number has to be same.
So you find the common factor which is 16 as 4 is a factor so to make 3/4 have a denominator of 16 you must multiply it with 4 which also means multiplying the numerator (Top number)
So, 3*4/4*4 = 12/16
And then
12/16-3/16
9/16

Find the least common multiple (LCM) of 4 and 16.
..4 = 2 * 2
16 = 2 * 2 * 2 * 2
----------------------------------
.....= 2 * 2 * 2 * 2
.....= 16

3/4 = (3 * 4)/(4 * 4) = 12/16
-3/16 = -3/16

3/4 - 3/16
= 12/16 - 3/16
= 9/16

You have to get them to have the same number on the bottom.

Choose a number that both 4 and 16 will go into with no remainder.

16 will do nicely so put 16 on the bottom.

Next divide the original bottoms into this new one. 4 goes in 4 times, now multiply the top by 4, giving 12, so you have 12/16. Then 16 goes in once, so multiply the top by one. 1 x 3 is 3, so you have 3/16

Now you can subtract 12/16 - 3/16

The answer is 9/16

in order to add or subtract fractions they need a common denominator

you cant change the 16, but choose a convenient 1

1 = (4/4)

3/4*1 -> 3/4*(4/4) = 12/16

same number, now subtract, 3 from 12 = 9. ans = 9/16

first you have to make the denominator the same, in this case

3/4 - 3/16

multiply 3/4 with 4/4 so that the denominator will be 16

12/16 - 3/16
once the denominator is the same you can simply minus the numerator
