The arterioles (i.e. small arteries) leading to an organ, such as the visual cortex of the brain, constrict in order to decrease flow to organ. To essentially shut down an organ, blood flow in reduced to 1% of its original value. By what factor did the radii of arterioles constrict ( assuming all other quantities remain constant)?

Q = (pi r^4 / 8ñ) x ( P2-P1/L )

Q - Flow
r - radius
ñ - constant
P1 - P2 - pressure difference at the two ends of the tube
L - length

Q = (pi r1^4 / 8ñ) x ( P2-P1/L ) ---> [1]

1/100 Q = (pi r2^4 / 8ñ) x ( P2-P1/L ) ---> [2]

[1] / [2]

100 = (r1/r2)^4
r1/r2 = 3.16227
r2 = r1 / 3.16227
