An aircraft is flying at 180km/hr and there is a northerly wind of 35 km/hr. The pilot steers the aircraft at an angle of 40 degrees east of north. Which direction (in degrees east of north) is the aircraft travelling over the ground??

By parallelogram law the angle, 'theta' that the aircraft velocity as seen on ground will make with air craft velocity with respect to wind is given by
theta = tan^-1[35 sin40/(180 + 35 cos 40)] = tan^-1[0.109] = 6.2 degrees. However the required answer is 40 - 6.2 = 33.8 east of north.
On ground the aircraft would move 33.8 degree east of north.
