Church is technically not the building. Rather it is the congregation of people, regardless if they are together or not.

Well, since it is your essay I'll only make a few recommendations; watch Stigmata, Doubt, the Last Temptation of Christ, Pass the Ammo, or Monty Python's Life of Brian for inspiration. Each one of those cover various aspects and range in tone from very serious to just plain absurd.
