A duvet is usually filled with down, which when it's good quality can be wonderful, extremely warm when you need that but not stifling. However, the main difference between the two is that a duvet has a plain cover with the down inside, and then you put it inside another more decorative cover. The idea is that when it needs washing, you remove the outer cover and wash that alone. In Europe, the duvet cover often replaces a top sheet so you only need to use a bottom sheet. You rarely need to wash the inner part, the duvet itself, since it's covered all the time. A comforter, on the other hand, is all one piece and if it needs cleaning you have to stuff the whole thing in a washing machine or take it out for cleaning since many of them are too large for a washer. Which one is more comfortable depends on the quality, how warm you need to be, and whether or not you mind sleeping under synthetic filler which many comforters have though there are ones made of down . Down breathes better and some people find synthetics make them sweaty at night, but people who are allergic to feathers can't use down.
