你好，首先要讲基本的语法咯，请看。。。

我们通常用 there is 是给那些单数的 (singular) 或不可数的 (uncountable) 名词，请看以下的例子。。。

Singular:-
1) There is a big tree in the garden.
2) There's (There is) a good film on TV tonight.
3) There is not a university.

Uncountable:-
1) There is a lot of salt in this soup.
2) There is a lot of food in the kitchen.

我们通常用 there are 是给那些复数的 (plural) 或可数的 (countable) 名词，请看以下的例子。。。

plural and countable:-
1) There are some big trees in the garden.
2) There are a lot of accidents on this road.
3) There are seven days in a week.
4) There are not many people in this restaurant.
5) There aren't (There are not) any big hotels.

所以，在我们用 there is / are 之前，我们必须先知道我们要用的名词是 singular / plural / countable / uncountable 来的咯。

不过，要你留意的是这个是比较特别的，需要点时间解释的。

也请你看 http://hk.dictionary.yahoo.com/search.html?s=lot 的第一个解释，它在用 a lot of 的时候，lot 就是单数 (singular) 和复数 (plural) 来的，所以我们用 there is 或 there are 是看 a lot of 的后面是用着 singular / plural / countable / uncountable 才决定的。
