河流入面也有一個生態環境。最簡單是有植物，有浮游生物，有魚蝦等。這會成為一個ecosystem。對於這些生物，河流就是牠們的habitat(棲息地)
通常會upset the habitat of river，是指它們受到破壞，以下的行為也會破壞它們的棲息地
- construction of dam in the upper course (興建提壩)
- soil erosion (沙的侵蝕作用)
- water pollution (水污染)
