Find the derivatives of the following functions:

1. h(x) = (x – 7)^2 / (x + 2)^2
2. F(x) = x^5 / (1 + x)^5

Ans.: Q1: 18(x – 7) / (x + 2)^3
Q2: 5x^4 / (1 + x)^3

Using quotient rule to tackle the problems.


1. h(x) = (x - 7)2 / (x + 2)2

dh(x)/dx = [2(x + 2)2(x - 7) - 2(x - 7)2(x + 2)] / (x + 2)4

= 2(x - 7)[(x + 2) - (x - 7)] / (x + 2)3

= 18(x - 7) / (x + 2)3

2. F(x) = x5 / (1 + x)5

dF(x)/dx = [5x4(1 + x)5 - 5x5(1 + x)4] / (1 + x)10

= 5x4[(1 + x) - x] / (1 + x)6

= 5x4 / (1 + x)6
