Copper(I) means Cu+ ion or the compound containing Cu+ ion.
Copper(II) means Cu2+ ion or the compound containing Cu2+ ion.
Copper(II) compounds, e.g. copper(II) sulphate crystals and copper(II) oxide, are commonly used in laboratory. In aqueous solutions, copper(II) is blue in colour.
Copper(I) compounds are less common. This is because copper(I) cannot exist in aqueous solution. In aqueous solution, copper(I) ion undergoes disproportionation (self redox) to give copper metal and copper(II) ion.
2Cu+(aq) → Cu2+(aq) + Cu(s)
Cu(I) only exists as insoluble solids (e.g. copper(I) oxide, Cu2O) or complex (e.g. [CuCl2]-).
