During the Holocaust, many citizens risked their lives and families' lives to help Jews. I learned that courage stems from a willingness to do what's right in the face of adversity or to do what's right when the government or large groups dictates the opposite. This is an example of ordinary people doing courageous things.

There have been numerous stories of young people jumping into the river or ocean to save somebody they didn't know, risking their lives and sometimes dying in that effort. Putting others' needs, especially someone you don't know, ahead of your own is a courageous act repeated daily by ordinary people. There are news stories of people who are walking by a burning home and pulling a person out. This is the same thing. Putting others first and helping others benefits the community because it makes it a kinder, gentler place.
