我同意你嘅講法。
trace 係 v.t. ，所以跟住嘅要係 object。
响你個 example， [ about 50 guests] 成個 phrase 就係個 object，所以可以跟住個 transitive verb [trace]。
以下都係好常見嘅例子:
Mary invites [about fifteen people] to her birthday party.
That man ate [about seven hambergers] within ten minutes.
