we can write the above question as:

y x 10^3 x 10^3 = 3.5 x 10^3

here 10^3 on both sides gets cancelled. so we'll get

y x 10^3 = 3.5

y = 3.5 / 10^3

therefore

y = 3.5 x 10 ^ -3

y = 0.0035..thats the solution..

Hi,

For this question, we simply need to divide both sides by 10^6 to get:

y = [3.5 x 10^-3]/[1x10^6]

Which becomes the following:

y = 3.5 x 10^-3 = 0.0035 <==== FINAL ANSWER

I hope that helps you out! Please let me know if you have any other questions!

Standard form is another term for scientific notation.

Divide both sides by 10^6. We have:
y=(3.5*10^3)/(10^6)

Look at 10^3/10^6. This is just 10^(3-6) or 10^-3.

The answer is 3.5*10^-3.

y = 3.5 x 10^3 x 10^(-6)

y = 3 x 10^(-3)

y * 10^6 = 3.5 * 10^3
y = 3.5 * 10^3 ÷ 10^6
y = 3.5 * 1/10^3
y = 3.5/1000
y = 0.0035
is the answer.

Howdy and I sure hope all is well. :)

As for your question, you obviously need to solve for Y, since it is the only variable ("non-numeral" or "non-number") in the equation.

To solve for Y, you need to divide both sides of the equation by 10^6.

(Note: When dealing with equations, you must perform the same operation on both sides of the equation, to maintain the equality. It's a lot like a scale. If I put an apple on one tray of the scale, but not the other, then the tray with the apple will swing down towards the counter/table, while the other end will swing up. To keep the scale level, I'd have to put an apple of equal size on both trays. The same thing applies to equations.)

So, the original equation is:

Y*10^6 = 3.5*10^3

Now we divide both sides by 10^6, to isolate Y. We get:

(Y*10^6)/10^6 = (3.5*10^3)/10^6

Simplifying yields:

Y = 3.5/10^3

(Note: When you have a fraction of the same number in both the numerator and the denominator, but is raised to different powers, then to simplify, the fraction gets rewritten as the number raised to the difference of the powers. E.g. 8^5/8^3 = 8^(5--3) = 8^2 & 7^3/7^5 = 7^(3--5) = 7^--2.)

So the above equation becomes:

Y = 3.5*10^--3

I sure hope that helps. :) Take very good care and have a great day. :)

Cheers! :)

y * 10^6 = 3.5 * 10^3
y = 3.5 * 10^3 ÷ 10^6
y = 3.5 * 1/10^3
y = 3.5/10.3
y = 0.0035
2009-05-17 4:47 pm
y*10^6=3.5*10^3

it can also be written as
y=(3.5*10^3)/10^6
y=3.5/10^3
y=0.0035

its too simple
Multiply both sides by 10^(-6)
it give y*10^6*10^(-6)=3.5*10^3*10^(-6)
=> y=3.5*10^(-3) (as a^x*a^y=a^x+y)
2009-05-17 4:46 pm
well, 3.5 x 10^3 = 3500
and 10^6 = 1 000 000
so y=3500/1000000 = 0.0035
